While as much as you only want to carry a Louis Vuitton bag to the Farmer’s Market, we all know that sticking your fresh flowers and strawberries in it, isn’t the best idea. That’s why you need the whimsical and stylish ‘My Other Bag’ totes for trips to the market or for your next beach day. Made in Los Angeles, the reusable totes are made of cotton canvas and are currently available in 16 different prints featuring mock-ups of designer purses that most of us dream of owning one day. I think it’s the perfect alternative for any purse-loving mom to carry to the grocery store, as for me, it might be the only time I do carry a Chanel purse on my arm.

I’m not very good at keeping my plants alive in my house but I do love seeing the greenery every time I walk by it. So in honor of Earth Day, I’m planning on planting a fancy terrarium with the kids to make our house a little more “green” both in color and in theory. Snag your favorite glass terrarium then just add soil, moss, small plants like ferns or succulents and pebbles to make a plain glass jar into its own greenhouse. For an extra dose of style, add ceramic figures like mushrooms, gnomes, butterflies or snails. For additional directions on how to build your own, visit the design lab at www.westelm.com.

Earth Day, Sunday, April 22, is fast approaching and you just know the kids are going to want create an earth-friendly craft to commemorate the day. While you could assemble a craft out of used toilet paper rolls, cardboard and egg cartons, it might actually save you time (and a headache) to just buy an eco-friendly art kit. Here’s a look at a few of our favorites to celebrate Mother Earth!

I’m a firm believer in that it’s not just what you wear but what you also wear underneath it all that counts. If you’re comfortable starting from essentials like bras and underwear, then the day will just be that much better. Stella McCartney gets that and that’s why she’s launched a new line of lingerie that is considerably more budget-friendly and also eco-friendly. With bras ranging from $55 to $65 and underwear from $26 to $30, the lingerie is made from organic cotton and recycled metal hardware. I must say with the on trend prints matched with the comfortable organic cotton fabric, I may have found the perfect holiday gift for myself.
We’ve spent a lot of time in the pool this summer and have gone through so many of those disposable swim diapers with the baby that it’s ridiculous. It’s about time someone came up with a really good reusable swim diaper that can stand the test of time. Jessica Alba’s new eco-friendly company, The Honest Company, that launched earlier this year has just added new products to its already eco-friendly line including a reusable swim diaper that is not only super stylish but is also budget and user-friendly too. Coming in two distinct prints, stripes and scales, the swim diaper is made of stretchy, waterproof and hygienic polyester knit material that can be washed and reused all summer long. The swim diaper has an adjustable waist and expandable leg openings so it won’t chaff your baby’s skin and it is chlorine and fade-resistant making it the perfect companion for your pool and beach outings.

It’s spring time which means that there are tons of babies being born right now and I’m pretty sure you’re in need of a unique gift idea. Sure you could go with the typical cheeky onesie or a stroller blanket but how about a gift that gives the baby a breath of fresh air — a plant from Green Your Air. Unlike flowers that die in a few days time, a beautiful plant will last a long time and they have two plants, the Fortis and the Viridis, that filters the air of chemicals like formaldehyde, benzene, xylene, tuolene and trichloroethylene. Arriving in an eco-friendly, non-toxic pot that is trendy with chevrons or classic with a modern floral design, the plants are the perfect arrival gift for a newborn baby and their family because it’s the gift that keeps on giving.

Looking around at a Farmers Market, you think to yourself…”that cute top cannot be eco-friendly” — or can it? Sure it can. Fashion has come a long way in the past few years with more apparel companies being eco-concious about not only the fibers and dyes they use but also they way they make their clothes. Here’s a few of my favorites to celebrate Earth Day and actually, any day you want to celebrate being eco-friendly.
Give kids an expensive toy and what do they play with first? The box, of course. And who can blame them? A box can be so many things…spaceship, turtle house, bridge. The parents behind the company Box Play recognized their own child’s love of boxes and ran with the idea. Today they create eco-friendly stickers that are sized to fit household packaging like egg cartons, tubes, cereal boxes and milk cartons. A rectangular tissue box becomes a chic clutch, an egg carton becomes a piano, an empty toilet paper roll becomes a bowling pin. It’s a great way to upcycle items you might otherwise recycle or throw away, plus it fuels great creativity and imagination for just a few dollars.

Now that Daylight Savings Time has come, it will start getting dark around 4 p.m. in some parts of the country and the kids are going to have some early evenings ahead of them. Be ready to change them into their coziest pajamas and loungewear with the new eco-friendly collection from SkylarLuna. Made and designed in California the pajamas are made with chemical-free, 100 percent organic cotton, and the collection features classic stripe designs as well as trendsetting designs with prints like bubbles and robots in sizes 12/18 months to 8T. However, the cutest part about the new line is the packaging — each pajama set comes enclosed in a reusable linen pouch…making it the perfect holiday gift!

Don’t be THAT mom this year that sends the kids to school with nothing but landfill wasting plastic bags for snacks and sandwiches. Instead opt to go the eco-friendly route this school year by using reusable snack and sandwich bags that can be packed just as easily as the plastic ones in your kid’s lunches. They are all easy to wash and rinse with soap and water and some are even dishwasher-safe — making it so easy for you to reduce your carbon footprint…one sandwich and snack at a time!

If you have an infant, you probably also have some sort of baby carrier. While they offer many benefits (durability, safety, convenience), they can rarely be called stylish. And when they need to be laundered, you wind up waiting hours for them to air dry. It’s exciting, then, to find one product that practically solves all the downsides of the standard baby carrier: the My Little Roo Slip Cover. Designed to fit the top carriers on the market, these covers feature stylish prints and extra pockets. Plus, when they become soiled, you just remove the covers and toss them into a machine washer and dryer. See the entire line of baby carrier slip covers and discover how they work at mylittleroo.com.

Looking at your kid’s juice box, you would probably never think about using it as a fashion accessory. Thanks to genius recycling designers, though, that’s exactly what those colorful boxes can become. Made from shredded juice boxes, the bags you see below are extremely durable (think about how your child punishes her juice box!) besides being stylish. Plus, companies like UrthBags are handcrafted by Fair Trade artisans and women’s organizations.

Eco-Clean-Hand-Wash-Wild-Fruits.jpgWe’re mildly obsessed with hand washes. And while we know there’s nothing wrong with Softsoap, sometimes we like to indulge ourselves just a little bit. So when we came across Eco Clean Wild Fruits Hand Wash—which not only smells amazing but is environmentally friendly—we were immediately intrigued.

The entire range of Eco Clean products is non-toxic and made from sugar beets—a sustainable, renewable, biodegradable resource that comes from Danish farms on the island of Falster. Each product in the line, like Wild Fruits Hand Wash, is made from plant and sugar based surfactants and fragranced with essential oils (think orange rosemary, spicy lavender and cool mint).

The hand wash is also allergy-friendly and paraben-free, which makes it perfect for even the fussiest of kids’ skin. (Or adults!)

And the Wild Fruits scent? So sweet and juicy smelling, and it just puts us in the best mood!

Eco Clean Wild Fruits Hand Wash retails for $4.99 at drugstore.com.
Being eco-friendly is so much more than just reusing and recycling these days — it’s a way of life. Supporting companies that use eco-friendly and sustainable materials to make clothing is important as fashion continues to make strides on being more environmentally friendly and maintaining fair trade labor practices. Here’s a look at some of our favorite eco-friendly fashions that are on trend for spring and summer and perfect for celebrating Earth Day!

Spring is one of the most popular seasons for babies to be born and we’re sure you’ve got at least one or more upcoming baby showers to attend. Show your friends how eco-friendly savvy you are by gifting not only a toy that is functional for baby but one that the mom will also love because it’s free of harmful toxins and dyes. Babies are known for putting things in their mouth so any of these eco-friendly toys are safe to “gum” making you the hero of the baby shower!

Since it’s the ground we walk on everyday, we should be aware of what we’re stepping on it with. Many shoe companies are getting smart about using recycled materials including rubber and metal to make eco-friendly and sometimes, vegan-friendly shoes. From peep-toe high heels to sporty sneakers, there is an eco-friendly shoe out there that you’re sure to love!

Since the first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970, as a society we’ve become more aware of our surroundings and impact on the earth. The fashion industry has made huge strides in becoming not only aware of their impact on our precious resources but also becoming eco-friendly and organic in the fabrics and dyes they use as well as their packaging for the consumer. Today we’re kicking off our week-long “earth friendly” series with a look at our favorite eco-friendly bags that are great for everyday or for carrying with you for shopping trips to the mall, farmers market or grocery store. We have so many options to choose from today, it’s nice to know which companies are really making an extra effort to be “green.”

Now there’s another use for those cardboard boxes that arrive on your doorstep every week from all the online shopping you’ve been doing.
