January found us ringing in the new year and ushering in the holographic trend. The shiny, dimensional metallic was everywhere from jeans to dresses to bags, yet many of us found them a bit too bold to adopt. If you love the look but fear the trend just a bit, jump feet first (or hands first) into the new crop of holographic nail polishes and lacquers. They add a cool amount of shine to summery ensembles, yet they’re age appropriate and subtle enough for just about everyone.

It’s been a long harsh winter in some areas of the country and the weather can actually really take a toll on your hair. Do your hair a favor and take a few minutes to get your hair ready for spring and summer weather by using conditioning and strengthening products that will make your hair shiny and new again. Here are a few of our favorites that will leave your hair with lasting benefits if used regularly. It also helps to start with a little hair trim for a really fresh start to the warm weather season.

With the spring season now underway, it’s time to freshen up your nail colors for your next manicure and pedicure with a variety of mint-inspired colors. Any hue in the blue-green family is on trend for the season and looks so great paired with metallic sandals or a big shiny bangle.

Based on the principal that everyone deserves to have quality cosmetics not just those that can afford them, Drew Barrymore created Flower Beauty that uses the same ingredients and formulas as high-end cosmetic companies but is much more budget-friendly. Sold exclusively at Walmart and Walmart.com, all products are made in the USA and are never tested on animals and includes a full line of cosmetics for your face including the popular BB Cream and tinted moisturizers, eyes, lips and nails. Each Tuesday, a new beauty tip is posted on the Web site, FlowerBeauty.com, by Drew herself and the color palettes are on trend with each season. Priced from 4.98 to 16.98, this is one beauty line you won’t want to miss.

As a busy mom, the more multi-functioning products we can have in our lives the better. This spring all you need to update your beauty routine is one product: BB cream. An all-in-one product that acts as your main face foundation, the BB cream replaces pretty much anything you put on your face before it, serum, moisturizer, primer, foundation and sunblock. Depending on the amount of coverage you want for your face, you can wear the BB cream over or under anything to make your skin look and feel smoother all over. Now that the Western markets have finally caught on to the BB cream beauty secrets that East Asia has been coveting for years, we just can’t get enough of it. Plus, they also say the BB creams have anti-aging benefits over the long-term — just what every mom needs.

Celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year this year isn’t only festive, it’s also very stylish. With 2013 named the Year of the Snake, faux snakeskin and snakeskin prints are turning up everywhere. Given the timelessness of snake prints, buying into this “trend” is really an investment although you don’t have to break the bank to work gorgeous snakeskin clothing and accessories into your wardrobe. Choose natural tones like brown, beige, black and white and wear them forever, or try a fun, eye-catching color like blue or green.

I love going to get a blowout. There’s something that is so fun about walking out with hair that is shiny and full of body. However, keeping it that way is another story. As a busy mom, I rarely have time to style my hair but I do love a few good products to help me “fake” the look. Drybar, one of the nation’s leading salons for blowouts, has just launched their own line of hair styling products to help you achieve the same look at home that you get in their salons. Playing off of their cheeky hair style names that give a nod to some our favorite libations like Southern Belle and Manhattan, the product line doesn’t disappoint. The line includes nine styling products including Detox Dry Shampoo, Happy Hour Blowout Shampoo and Conditioner, Money Maker Flexible Hairspray, Hot Toddy Hair Protector and Cream Soda Smoothing Cream. The new line also includes a blowout hair dryer, hair brushes and flat iron all in the company’s signature yellow and grey colors. If you are hair novice, these are the products that will get you excited about learning to do your own “do.”

Spring is almost here and a new beauty regimen is in order. Prime your look with shades of blue eyeshadow like aqua, indigo and navy, add a streak of electric red lipstick and paint those nails in pale colors of white, baby pink and tan for the perfect spring face. Top is all off with a head wrap or a gauzy scarf wrapped into your hair for a boho chic spring vibe.

While no one misses the ever-expanding tummy, swollen feet and nausea that comes with pregnancy, most of us do miss that pregnancy glow once baby is here. Suddenly we begin hearing “you look tired” more often than “you look radiant.” Sure, it takes incubating a tiny human to really get it back but there are a few great products we can use to mimic that look. One of the best natural substances to exfoliate and brighten the skin is pumpkin, which seems especially perfect this time of year. Whether you use a pumpkin-infused scrub, enzymatic peel or mask, the products featured below are sure to give you back a little bit of that gorgeous radiance…no bump necessary.

While it seems that the gluten-free diet has made its mark on the food industry, it also has now made its way over to cosmetics as well. If you’re sensitive to gluten or have celiac disease you may be wondering if you really need to go as far as wearing makeup that is gluten-free. Technically, you don’t because gluten isn’t absorbed through the skin but just like any food that you may ingest with gluten, lipstick can be absorbed via your food, drink and saliva. If you’re on the gluten-free track, it’s a good idea to swap out your lipstick and lip gloss for one of the three brands below that have gluten-free lip products to keep you healthy and looking good.

The perfect bold berry or crimson pout takes some work…a lot of work. With a traditional lipstick, you absolutely must exfoliate and moisturize to prepare. Then there’s the routine of priming, lining, filling, blotting and re-touching over and over again. When there’s barely enough time in the day as it is, all this extra work can be too much no matter how ‘in’ the look is. Luckily there are some other options for us these days. If you love the matte look (or just hate re-applying or leaving lip prints on your kids), stains and markers are perfect. Just slather on lip balm as you get ready, then wipe it off and apply the stain for a look that lasts nearly all day. For those of us with chronically dry lips or who just prefer a dewier look, tinted balms and sticks are the way to go. Slough off dead skin with a toothbrush and apply the color. You’ll have to re-apply after eating or drinking, but they often go on easily without the need for a mirror. No matter what form you choose, it’s a win-win for busy moms who crave the berry look this season.

It certainly isn’t back-to-school-time yet but we’re betting Crayola’s latest box of colors is sure to be on your next shopping list. Just released this week, Crayola has launched a limited edition set of eight mini nail polishes in shades that are perfect for summertime pedicures. Choose from glittery finishes and metallic hues in fun shades like blue, green, pink and yellow. Sure, you can say it’s for the kids but we wouldn’t blame you one bit for trying it yourself.

After you’ve moved all your tank tops and shorts to the front of the closet, it’s now time to freshen up your beauty cabinet too. The best place to start is with a light and fresh fragrance that reminds you of summer. Think fresh and light scents with notes of coconut, vanilla, gardenia, and citrus to have your scent transported to a tropical island. Beauty hint: spritz a little on post-shower so the scent stays with you longer.

There’s nothing worse than having your face melt-off in the middle of summer because you’re wearing too much makeup in the sun. While I’m sure you also don’t have that much time to get ready with all the kids home for the summer, you can make your life even easier with a few essentials like sunscreen, hair protector, bronzer and lip tint with SPF, for a look that’s a breeze to put together, yet so stylish for the season.

Those of us who travel frequently with kids know that a perpetually-stocked travel bag is a major sanity saver. Impromptu family trip? You’re ready. The trouble is that sometimes it’s easy to forget to re-stock or update old products. Case in point: I recently arrived at a beach vacation with dried up deodorant. It seems like there are towelette products for everything these days (tans, teeth cleaning, exfoliation), so it was no surprise to see several deodorant towelettes for sale. Really, this is one that makes great sense when you’re a busy on-the-go mom. While some deodorant towelettes boast seven days’ worth of protection, others work perfectly well for 24 hours. Either way, it’s a great idea for the travel bag or your handbag year ‘round.

Get ready to get those toes and nails manicured and polished up for the spring season with a big splash of color. The year’s hottest nail colors are anything but traditional as we’re seeing mint, tangerine, fuchsia, nude and metallic nails on the streets. Another new trend is to skip the polish altogether and put a fun print on your nails via “nail skin” — try it if you dare!

One stop shopping just got a little bit easier as one of our favorite lines of t-shirts and dresses, Splendid, adds a line of body care products to their Web site.
