When asked how she got back into pre-baby shape so quickly, Jessica Alba recently told magazines her secret was wearing a corset non-stop for the first three months after her baby was born. While some think this sounds a little extreme (and painful), lighter and more comfortable post-partum shapewear is exponentially increasing in popularity. For a little extra support as the abdomen shrinks or for full-on girdle-like shaping to, there are dozens of popular products on the market now to give new moms a little extra help to bounce back quickly. Do they work? Reviews seem to be mixed. Still, a little extra support can’t be a bad thing.

We’ve all been there…you pack up all the kids and the baby and check the house three times to make sure you have everything before you head out for the day, only to remember that you forgot to pack the baby’s toys, your toddler’s special snack and your oldest one’s bathing suit because you’re going to the water park. Ugh! As a busy mom, it’s nearly impossible to remember to pack everything all the time. Things that you don’t need seem to find their way into your diaper bag and the items you really DO need, never seem to make their way back in. While it would be nice to be organized and have two or three spare bags all lined up and ready to go at a moment’s notice, chances are…it’s not going to happen.

Now, when I know I’m going to be out the whole day, I pack the diaper bag the night before and make a mental note of the top five items the baby and kids will need while we’re gone. It helps to cut down on last minute stress and forgetting essential items like diapers and wipes because you know if you don’t pack them, they will inevitably need them. Here’s a quick checklist of my favorite essentials that keep baby happy (and mom too) so everyone can enjoy their time away from home.

Diapers are probably the most important item with which to keep your bag stocked. I also keep my car stocked with them as a backup, just in case I didn’t restock my bag. After my first baby, I decided that one can never have too many stacks of diapers because chances are, they will eventually get used. However, one thing I don’t like, is leaky diapers that move as the baby moves. If she shimmies too much in her car seat, it can create a leaky diaper and leaves a whole new mess for us to clean up on our big days out. That’s why I’m loving the new Huggies Snug & Dry Diapers because they hug her shape without being too tight and prevent unnecessary leaks. In fact, last time we went to the store, I bought a whole pack just to leave in the car because you never know when nature will call. Don’t forget to pack the wipes too!

So sometimes there is a little mishap with the diaper situation (especially with newborn babies), a spare change of clothes is always in order. For girls, the best thing is to carry a spare pair of leggings and a t-shirt and for boys, a onesie and pants will get you through the rest of the day. I carry my spare clothes in a Itzy Ritzy Wet Happened Bag, $18.99, so I can immediately put the wet clothes in the bag and seal it so it doesn’t get the other items in the diaper bag wet. It also keeps the dry clothes free from crumbs and crayon marks while in the diaper bag. The Wet Happened bag is also great for bathing suits and other items that may get wet while you’re out.

Babies, toddlers and kids can’t seem to go anywhere without being hungry. I think sitting in the car reminds them that they want a snack. And another snack…and another. My kids are constantly eating so therefore, we don’t leave the house without a diaper bag full of snacks. While newborn babies need to have either mom close by with her Hooter Hider, $30.44, or their bottles and formula packed in the diaper bag, babies and toddlers that are older can snack on other snack items to get them through to their next meal. I’m a huge fan of the pouch trend and throw several in the diaper bag to get us through a long day. The baby’s favorite is Ella’s Kitchen, $11.52 for a 7 pack, which mixes everything from pumpkin and parsnips to apples and pears together in one pouch. Along with the pouches, don’t forget to bring one of the handy click-on spoons for easy eating on the go, Munchkin Click Lock Food Pouch Spoon, $4.49. Once finger foods are introduced, a Munchkin Snack Catcher, $7.49 for a 4 pack, is essential to avoid Cheerios and Goldfish crackers all over your car floor.

There have been plenty of times where the only toys available for me to give the baby were not really toys. My lipgloss, a pouch of Kleenex, my wallet or my iPhone. I learned my lesson after the last episode that required me to clean smeared lipgloss and baby drool off my precious iPhone. Now I try to keep a few toys and books in the diaper bag for entertainment. My favorite item to bring for babies and toddlers are the Jellycat Soft Books, $16, which are readable, touchable and fun. They are also easily packable because you can bend and fold them if you need to. For teething babies, you can’t go wrong with the Sophie the Giraffe Teething Ring, $14.50, and music is always soothing for babies and toddlers with the Baby Einstein Take Along Tunes, $8.99. As your baby grows, you’ll definitely find that they have toys they prefer to take with them more than others which is fine as long as it still fits in your bag.

Of course, you can’t be prepared for every situation but as a busy mom on-the-go, you can sure try your best. Just be sure that you’re actually able to carry your diaper bag and the baby without hurting your back because then nobody will be going anywhere!

In the world of prints, gingham evokes some pretty heavy love and hate. Generally speaking, we either love the country inspiration of it or loathe it for the same reason. In a season where prints are everything, gingham has appeared in force for spring and summer. Oddly enough, many of us who count ourselves in the “loathe” category are warming up to gingham just a bit. In novel colors, varying scale and on very updated clothing designs, the colorful check looks fresh and a little upscale rather than down-on-the-farm. Check out the styles featured below. You may find yourself actually smitten with gingham.

I remember with my first daughter, I had to have the best of everything on the market when it came to baby gear. The best stroller, the top-of-the-line bedding, the designer diaper bag — the whole nine yards, right down to the wipe warmer. It turns out that most of it wasn’t the best. It was expensive and looked fantastic, but it just wasn’t functional. The exact same thing happened at my baby shower. So many cute, adorable dresses that everyone “oohed and ahhed” over but my daughter never got the chance to wear because wearing a giant puffy dress to the park just isn’t practical. It was then that I decided to get smart the second time around and even smarter this last time on my third child.

You’ll see lists all over the Internet of people telling you what you DO and DON’T need, but what they don’t tell you is that with each passing year, the baby gear gets smarter, cuter and even more functional than ever. Every time I see a new product, I say to myself, “Why didn’t I think of that?” or, “I wish I had that 18 months ago!” because the baby products now are so fun to have and use. If I was to have a baby again (that would make four), here are the top five things I would add to my list and I think you’ll want to add them to yours too.

With three kids, we’re short on space. Not only that, but what they didn’t tell me with my first child is that babies don’t like the massive space available to them in a regular size crib. They want to be snuggled and secure and not have the ability to roll around and not feel anything near them (hence, why they like to be swaddled). We had a crib and a bassinet, which was perfect. However, if your baby is on the tall side, they will outgrow the bassinet very quickly. The best of both worlds is the Alma Mini Crib, $340, which is half the size of a regular size crib without sacrificing sturdiness or style, comes in adorable colors like orange, green and grey and also folds up nicely for storage or travel. For us, it was the perfect compromise of style and function because you could use it from newborn to toddler (max. weight 50 lbs.) and the bright color of the crib was a bright spot in our newly redecorated bedroom.

Speaking of swaddling, I don’t know where I would be today without my Aden + Anais Muslin Swaddle Blankets, $49.95. Yes, they are perfect for swaddling your newborn like a little burrito, but I also use them for all kinds of other things like as an impromptu picnic blanket, as a sun shade on the stroller, they work as blankets in warm or cold weather and sometimes, I used them as a nursing cover. I also love that they come with directions on how to swaddle (because no mom actually remembers that no matter how many kids you’ve had) and the patterns are adorable. My kids have long outgrown swaddling but these blankets I still keep around because they never go out of use.

Wipes…you use a lot of them during the diaper years. You also use a lot of them after the diaper years for quick clean-ups and hand washing on the go. I have them in my house, in my car and in my purse. While it’s obvious that if you have a baby and toddlers, you’re also going to have wipes around, you sometimes also want the illusion that they’re not there. With the new Huggies Natural Care wipes in Designer Tubs, you don’t have to hide the ugly wipe container. You can actually leave it on the counter and not be ashamed should you get an unannounced visitor at your door because the beautiful tub blends into the decor of your living room. Currently, my Huggies Designer Tub is sitting on my kitchen counter and I don’t mind at all because it’s the one thing that is so pretty next to those unwashed dishes.

One of the biggest pet peeves in my house is stuffed animals. The kids love them. They love to collect them, but then what? They pile up and up with nowhere to go but all over the room and their beds. I regularly clean them out but then new ones find their way in. It’s a never-ending battle — me vs. stuffed animals. Two babies ago, I was introduced to the Cloud B Twilight Turtle, $36.95, and I instantly fell in love because it was a stuffed animal with a purpose. It’s cute, it’s cuddly and it glows. It does more than glow actually, it lights up your child’s bedroom ceiling with constellations, easing the fear of darkness and making bedtime that much easier. We now own one Twilight Turtle, one Twilight Ladybug and one Twilight Carz, because sharing your nightlight with your siblings is not fun at all!

I love bags, purses and yes, even diaper bags. I change them as often as I change my shoes so finding the perfect diaper bag is nearly impossible, but what I can tell you is that a diaper bag that is disguised as a purse, is the best of both worlds. Style, function and budget-friendly definitely collide in the Skip Hop Versa Diaper Bag, $70. It has plenty of pockets to keep even the moms of multiples happy, while the metallic colors or happy black and white pattern make it a stylish way to carry baby items.

There are so many items to choose from that I know it can be overwhelming, so the best advice I can give you is to follow your instinct on what works best for your family in function, style and in life. What’s your must-have products where style meets function?

If there is one article of clothing I’ve come to embrace since having children, it’s the t-shirt. The perfect style looks great with jeans or casual skirts, feels comfortable and washes up perfectly. As great as the perfect tee is, however, there are times when it begins to feel like a “momiform” (mom uniform). At this point, it’s time to jazz it up a bit. Easier than a blazer or jewelry, the utility (or safari or military) vest can transform a basic tee into something a little bit cooler and more pulled together. It’s also a manageable light layer for those stores or movie theaters that get a little heavy handed with the air conditioning. The styles featured below are some of your best bets thanks to durability and style, plus the price-points are extremely budget-friendly.
